Do you like tacos? Margaritas? Street art? Then you’ll want to check out Downtown Indy’s newest addition: Broken English Taco Pub, on the corner of Georgia and Meridian streets (where Tilted Kilt used to be). This is restaurant owner Adolfo Garcia’s first location outside of Chicago, and he brings the fun and flavor of Chicago street art to the inside (and outside) of his taco pub with JC Rivera’s wall-to-wall (and floor-to-ceiling) caricatures of personified avocados, lightning bolts, coyote-and-cactus scenes and painted banners with venue-appropriate catchphrases like “Taco Dirty to Me.” Also, for any fellow “Stranger Things” fanatics, you can dine under strings of Christmas lights–lots of them–and anxiously wait for the lights to flicker. (For the record, they didn’t.)
Ready to try out a new taco place? (Aren’t we all?) The taco pub’s grand opening takes place tomorrow (11/16), but I was lucky to attend tonight’s VIP happy hour preview party with other Indy Blog Society members and the media, so I’ve got your inside scoop.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t lucky enough to get photos of our food, but I can tell you it was delicious. When in doubt, try all the tortilla chip guac and salsas (the red one has a kick!). As for the main event–the tacos–we tried the carne asada (grilled steak with onion and cilantro), al pastor de pollo (roasted chicken marinated in chile guajillo and topped with pineapple), pork carnitas with salsa verde, and camarones (salsa-marinated shrimp topped with pickled onion and a special mayo made with Central American herbs). The shrimp taco was my fave, the chicken one a close second.
The full menu wasn’t available during our preview party, so that means I’ll have to go back to try one of the taco pub’s churros for dessert.
On a budget? Head over on Tuesday nights for Broken English’s half-price deal on tacos ($2 per taco, normally $8 for a set of two) and $5 house margaritas (normally $9).
