Sure, it’s still technically New York Fashion Week–the time when we look forward several seasons to trends we’ll see again months from now–but c’mon, we’re easily more enticed by the instant gratification of new pieces we can wear now. And who better to share those trends than the always-best-dressed Laura Walters of Style Riot?
Before Laura jet-setted to NYC for Fashion Week, she and Banana Republic teamed up for an evening of treats (courtesy of Palomino Restaurant) and trends for this fall–including a few sneak peeks of the Olivia Palermo collection for BR that launched last Saturday. (I’m dying over this red-and-gold military coat from the collection!)
So, what should we be pulling out of our closets this season? The good news: There are a LOT of fun trends for fall, many of which are broad enough to include different fashion genres. So whether you’re a little more punk or a little more prep, you can easily adapt them to your own style.
Fall 2017 trends are…
Rockin’ red. Like the military coat I linked to above, red is the queen of all colors this fall–although I’m sure some New Yorkers might beg to differ. 😉 If you’ve checked out Vogue’s September issue, you probably noticed that half the ads seem to include the color red. That’s no coincidence. Other hot colors: chocolate brown, golds and other metallics, and the always-appropriate jewel tones.
A salute to vintage. The resurgence of vintage-inspired faux fur, leisure suits and 70s plaid means this girl needs another trip to Broad Ripple Vintage, stat!
A new take on the Wild West–and the Victorian Era. Yeah, I didn’t imagine those two being in the same sentence, either. Whether you go rustic or polished, the idea is the same: subtle nods to the original, such as Victorian collars with modern color palettes and the (as of right now) ever-present extravagant bell sleeve, or a play on Western-style fringe.
Speaking of fringe… Think (hot) pink, even black, for a fresh way to style it.
More florals! You thought florals were done? Think again. They’re dark, moody and romantic this time around.
Contemporary shoes that also shine as works of art. We can’t forget about the footwear! It’s all about the bold details: sky-high architectural heels, embroidery, glitter and sparkle.
Velvet, velvet, velvet! More specifically, velvet worthy of a black-tie occasion. My favorite item for holiday parties this year? A black velvet jumpsuit I plan to dress up with a silk blouse or brocade blazer. My friend and fellow blogger Britt (of Britt Behind the Scenes) rocked a sleek, monochromatic look with velvet accents during the event too (see below, right).
